Working Safely

IOSH Working Safely is an interactive course that gives delegates introductory health and safety training about:

  • Reasons why to work safely, with key statistics
  • Defining hazard and risk
  • The six types of hazard
  • Identifying common hazards and ones which are more difficult to identify
  • How to control hazards using the 'hierarchy of hazard controls'
  • Employee responsibilities regarding safety
  • The importance of PPE and emergency procedures
  • How to improve safety performance

How delegates are assessed:

  • A multiple choice question paper (20 out of 33 required)
  • A 'hazard spotting' assessment (10 out of 16 required)

Delegates need a total of 61% to pass.

IOSH Working Safely helps electricians to get their ECS cards easily. It is equivalent to a Level 1 in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment award. If delegates also pass the online CITB Health, Safety and Environment Operatives test, they will be able to gain the CSCS green Labourer card.

Delegates will get a copy of the Working Safely workbook where they can refer back to key information. They will gain a certificate or can opt for the 'safety passport' photo card for an additional fee.

Managing Safely

The IOSH Managing Safely course is for supervisors who aim to improve worker morale and reduce the potential for workplace incidents to occur. This leads to increased motivation, productivity and financial gain.

This interactive course enables delegates to:

  • Develop confidence and independence in carrying out 'matrix' risk assessments: i.e. evaluating the likelihood and consequence of 'reasonably forseeable' risks and choosing suitable control measures which weigh 'reasonably practicability' and consider the 'hierarchy of hazard controls'. This method numerically ranks the risks, which makes it easier to prioritise which to reduce first.
  • Be fully aware of a wide range of workplace hazards, their causes, effects and how to control them.
  • Be aware of key civil law and criminal law legislation regarding workplace safety.
  • Know how to evaluate the effectiveness of new and existing health and safety policies.
  • Have the skills to develop their own health and safety management system and safe systems of work and make further changes if needed.
  • Know how to react, conduct a structured investigation and write a report in the event of an incident.
  • Use the 'causal tree' method to identify 'root', 'underlying' and 'immediate' causes of incidents.
  • Measure health and safety performance using 'proactive' and 'reactive' indicators, how to calculate 'incidence rates' and how to use these for internal auditing.

How delegates are assessed:

  • Workplace risk assessment project
  • Multiple choice paper (60% required)

Delegates will be supplied a copy of the Managing Safely workbook to keep, where they can refer back to key information. This also has risk assessment, incident and investigation templates.

Managing Safely Refresher

It is recommended that every three years, delegates who have completed Managing Safely attend the Managing Safely Refresher course in order to maintain their knowledge and keep their skills up to date. The main aim of the course is for delegates to be well practiced in writing risk assessments, incident report forms and being able to select suitable hazard control measures which balance effectiveness, practicability, cost and effort.

This course includes interactive case study activities and enables delegates to recap:

  • The importance of managing safely
  • Know their role in managing safely
  • How a safety and health management system can help
  • The importance of good leadership in promoting a positive safety culture
  • The four C's of safety management
  • Three essential principles of good safety practice
  • How to work effectively
  • How to work beyond compliance
  • Effective organisational planning
  • Performance indicators
  • The six types of hazard
  • The five steps to risk assessment
  • How to implement the hierarchy of hazard controls
  • How to carry out internal auditing

Delegates are assessed through a multiple choice assessment. 60% is required to pass.

Delegates will receive a copy of the Managing Safely Refresher workbook where they can refer back to key information. This also has risk assessment, incident and investigation templates.

About our training venue

For over a decade, The Place of Refuge Community Church (PORCC) has carried out a high range and volume of charity work, serving the local community. Proceeds from the hire go towards this registered charity, which was nominated for The Express & Star 'RAVES' award and won ‘Highly Commended’ in the Ansvar Church Community Project Award.

They have a purpose built classroom with a built in projector and the venue itself is easily accessible by road (near M6 junctions 7 and 9), away from congested areas, has free onsite parking and is near two train stations.

Course dates

We are a small firm and like to work to round to accommodate delegates. If you request a specific date, you are likely to be able to get trained that day. The official dates are on the IOSH website directory, but IOSH allow training providers to adapt these to meet the needs of clients.

Generally we run the IOSH courses on the following days, (but remember we are flexible):

Mondays-Wednesdays Managing Safely
Thursdays Managing Safely Refresher
Fridays Working Safely

If you urgently need Working Safely for an ECS card, just contact us and we will fit you in at your earliest convenience.

Start times

We normally agree on a 10.00 to 10.30 am start, so you can set off after 9.00am and miss the traffic. But you can begin earlier or later depending upon your circumstances that day. If you arrive late, don't worry, you will get trained as normal or we will catch you up.

How to book

Just text or email:

telling us the course you want to do and your preferred date and time. If we are not running training at the time, we will call you back straight away and make arrangements to suit you. The chances are you will get your preferred date and time. Feel free to email, text or even phone us out of work hours.

Prices

The total prices of our courses are less than the 'excluding VAT' prices of most other providers. We will not charge you VAT because all of our courses are VAT exempt. There are no 'booking fees', deposits to pay or other such charges. Because we also advertise using third party companies, we cannot publish our prices here.

Payment

Simply pay us by 5.00pm on the day of your training. There is no need to pay in advance and if you can't make the training for whatever reason, just let us know at your earliest convenience and we will not charge you anything.

General feedback from delegates

We gain a lot of pleasure from getting our students certified and all of our feedback has been very positive so far, with delegates saying comments like:

It is not uncommon for our IOSH delegate feedback forms have all of the 'excellent' boxes ticked.

Other information

Investment in IOSH training is a strong indication of positive safety culture within your organisation. Implementing the strategies of Managing Safely and Working Safely will encourage workers to be more motivated and will be favourably regarded during HSE visits. Numerous case studies have proved that for every £1 invested in good health and safety equipment, training and practice, at least £7 is saved. This is known as the 'iceberg effect'.

We take a keen interest in students' experiences regarding safety and encourage them to share their experiences and practices they see at work. We also encourage delegates to take as long as they need to gain confidence when learning new knowledge and developing skills and not to hesitate in asking us questions.
